Preaching this Sunday: Hank Millstein will speak on “The Accidental Linguist.” When Pastor Rebecca met her husband he was working as the tribal linguist for the Warm Springs Confederated Indian Tribes in Oregon. Rebecca asked Hank to speak on what he learned about his own faith in his years working with the elders on the reservation and Sahaptin and Wasco, two of the three languages that were historically spoken on the reservation. For years, Hank met with the elders and made recordings and wrote dictionaries and grammars for each of these languages in the effort to preserve an oral and written record of the languages while there were still living speakers. He says, “It was the merest chance that go me working on the Warm Springs Reservation with the daunting title of Tribal Linguist. And the people of Warm Springs taught me lots more than I ever imparted to them.”
